You know you are from Davis if you went downtown Davis to see Dr. Pence.

A few weeks ago, a Davis resident named Catherine Heusner contacted the Pence to ask if we were interested in a portrait of Joe Pence. Her mother Monique Heusner had created it many years ago, and she had unfortunately just passed away. When Natalie Nelson, Pence Director, visited her mother's house, she discovered many wonderful watercolor paintings, and other artworks. Monique was a high school art and French teacher, who had dated Joe Pence in the 80s.

After Joe Pence's retirement from his dental practice, he lived in Sebastopol at a farm, where he made homemade apple cider and grew vegetables and fruits to sell at local farmer's markets. Many Davis residents used to see Joe at Davis Farmers Market, where he sold the apple juice. A common sight was Joe wearing a red neckerchief, which also makes it into the artwork. The artist also included a sign of the Pence, a British 10 Pence coin with the words "New Pence" and a lion.

This piece, created in 1986, may have been referring to the Pence Gallery's 10th anniversary that year. But the real treasure is having something authentic that represents one of our original donors, Joe Pence, who gifted the land and original building with his then wife Hazel.
