It’s Shark Week! 🦈 The Ponce Inlet area/ NSB is the unofficial shark-bite capital of the world.

💡 Did you know? The inspiration for shark week was a true story that, as tragic as it was, led to more accurate scientific understanding of shark species and their different behaviors. Between July 1 and 12, 1916, at a time when most people believed sharks to be harmless and afraid of humans, a rogue great white shark terrorized beach-goers along the New Jersey shore. Four people were killed and at least one was injured. The attacks set off a national panic that even involved the Coast Guard as shark hunters tried to find the killer shark and save the tourist economies of coastal beach towns all over the country.

The Florida Museum of Natural History’s International Shark Attack File recently published its summary of shark bites for 2020 and once again, Florida topped the list. There were 129 reported attacks worldwide last year, 33 of which occurred in the U.S., which has more bites than any other country. Australia comes in at second with 18. Other than those two, no other country had more than one incident. Of the 33 bites in America, 16 occurred in Florida, putting it at the top of the list for states. Half of those bites occurred in Volusia County.

That brings Volusia County to a grand total of 366 recorded bites dating back to 1882, more than any other county, state or territory in the world. 😲

Last night was about so much more than baseball. ❤️⚾

We had a great time cheering on the Volusia County Firefighters as they took on the Volusia Sheriff's Office, but the biggest win of the night happened off the field.

The event was held in support of the V Foundation for Cancer Research, raising more than $70,000 to help fund childhood cancer research. It's amazing to see our local first responders come together, not only for a little friendly competition, but to make a real difference for children and families facing cancer.

It was such a fun evening with our little family, and we're grateful to have been a small part of such a meaningful event. 💙❤️

Here's to supporting our heroes, giving back to our community, and helping create a future where every child has a fighting chance.
