The deadline for public comment on PennDOT plans on road improvements to the Baltimore Pike (Route 1) corridor at Granite Run ends Friday.
The project focuses on improving the 87-year-old cloverleaf interchange at Route 352 as well as well changes at Route 452 (Pennell Road) and Baltimore Pike.
Officials say the Baltimore Pike, 352 interchange, built in 1939, no longer meets today’s traffic volumes, safety needs, or access demands for residents, commuters and emergency services.
PennDOT is reviewing options to reduce crashes and backups, improving pedestrian access, modernize the roadway layout, and support future growth across this growing part of Delaware County.
The study area is divided into three parts:
• Area 1 includes Route 1 from Riddle Hospital and the Promenade east, including the 352 Interchange to the Media Bypass.
• Area 2 looks at the Baltimore Pike corridor west of Riddle Hospital
• Area 3 focuses on the intersection of routes 352 and Route 452 north towards Fair Acres.
PennDOT said the project would to reduce crashes and congestion, improve access management and pedestrian accommodation, reduce existing facility deficiencies, and improve roadway network operational efficiency.
Project improvements have been developed in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration, the Delaware County Planning Commission, and Middletown Township.
A PennDOT Planning and Environmental Linkage Study published in June presents a number of options. The study looked at multiple issues including pedestrian and bicycle accommodation and safety, traffic noise and air quality.
That study notes sidewalks are limited and where they exist and do not connect residential areas with pedestrian destination points such as the Prominade at Granite Run, Riddle Hospital, Longview Park, and Penncrest High School.
Existing shoulders on Route 352 and Baltimore Pike are too narrow to accommodate bicycle traffic outside the travel lane. The recommended alternative includes new sidewalks and widened shoulders along both Route 352 and Baltimore Pike throughout the project limits.
Proposed improvements in Area 1 include a connecting road to U.S. 1 and Route 352 in the Southwest quadrant, relocating emergency access drive to Riddle Hospital, and various access driveways off the Connector Road.
In area 1, Baltimore Pike would be two lanes in each direction continuing to the Media Bypass via free-flowing ramps.
Penn Charter Drive would be extended to Route 352 and Rose Tree Road would be realigned to the signalized intersection with the Promenade at Granite Run entrance.
Sidewalks would be installed along U.S. 1, Route 352, and the Connector Road.
In Area 2, south of Riddle Hospital, there would be three lanes in each direction with dual left turns onto Route 452 (Pennell Road). Two thru lanes on Route 452, with an exclusive right-turn lane and shared thru and right-turn lane from Route 452 northbound to Baltimore Pike
A new traffic signal would be installed at Route 452 and Printers Way with two thru lanes in each direction along Route 452.
In Area 3 there would be widening of the Route 352 and Route 452. A dual left turn from northbound Route 452 to northbound Route 352 would be added and two through lanes in each direction through the intersection along Route 352. Northbound Route 352 two-lane widening extends across Old Forge Road
PennDOT officials say public comment is a key part of the process helping them understand real‑world issues people experience daily and shape which improvements move forward into design.
