BLACK HILLS LEGENDS: PREACHER SMITH

He walked into the Black Hills carrying a Bible.

A few months later, he was found dead beside a trail.

Meet Henry Weston Smith, better known as Preacher Smith.

In 1876, thousands were pouring into the Black Hills searching for gold.

Smith came looking for something else.

Souls.

He preached outdoors on the dirt streets of Deadwood, worked odd jobs during the week and walked miles to surrounding mining camps to preach on Sundays. Historical accounts describe him as quiet and unassuming, preaching to crowds on Main Street.

On August 20, 1876, Smith left a note on his cabin door:

“Gone to Crook City to preach, and if God is willing, will be back at three o’clock.”

He never came back.

Smith was found dead along the road to Crook City, shot through the heart.

He had not been robbed.

Who killed him?

Some blamed Native Americans. Others suspected thieves. Another theory claimed Deadwood’s saloon and vice operators feared his preaching might be bad for business.

Nearly 150 years later, no one knows for certain.

Today, Preacher Smith rests at Mount Moriah Cemetery, where a life-size statue marks his grave.

He came to the Black Hills for just a few short months.

And became a legend that Deadwood still hasn’t forgotten.

BLACK HILLS LEGENDS: SETH BULLOCK

He looked exactly like the kind of man you did not argue with.

Meet Seth Bullock.

Bullock arrived in Deadwood in 1876, just one day before Wild Bill Hickok was murdered.

At the time, Deadwood was wild, lawless and overflowing with gold seekers, gamblers and outlaws. Bullock came to open a hardware business.

Instead, he became sheriff.

And by all accounts, he didn’t need to shoot his way into earning respect. His stare apparently did a lot of the work.

Bullock later built the Historic Bullock Hotel and became close friends with Theodore Roosevelt. Their friendship lasted for decades, and after Roosevelt’s death, Bullock helped establish a monument to his friend overlooking the Black Hills.

Seth Bullock died just months later in 1919.

Today, he’s buried high above Deadwood at Mount Moriah Cemetery, with his grave positioned to look toward the Roosevelt monument.

Lawman. Businessman. Frontiersman. And quite possibly the most intimidating mustache in Black Hills history.
