One of the many things we love about Alabama ! đź’š

Most people don't know that Alabama hosts one of the most spectacular wildlife events in the entire eastern United States — and it happens every single winter right here in the Tennessee Valley. 🦅

Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge in Decatur is the winter home of tens of thousands of sandhill cranes, and when they lift off at sunrise, the sky goes dark with wings. 🌅 The ancient, rattling call of the cranes rolling across the water is something you feel in your chest before you ever see them.

The refuge has been protecting this stretch of the Tennessee River since 1938, and every November through February, birdwatchers travel from across the country to witness what Alabamians have quietly known about for generations.

Have you ever seen the crane migration at Wheeler? Drop your story below — or tag someone who needs to make the drive up to Decatur this winter! 👇

Weather update Saturday 10:49am

Severe Weather Update for Lawrence County

Good morning everyone, I’m providing an update regarding the potential for severe weather late Sunday night into Monday morning.

According to the latest briefing from the National Weather Service, a line of severe thunderstorms is expected to move across our area Sunday night into early Monday morning. The main threats with this system will be widespread damaging winds and the possibility of a few tornadoes.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed Lawrence County and much of northwest and north-central Alabama under an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe weather Sunday night.

After the storms move through, we are also expecting much colder temperatures to arrive Monday and Tuesday, with wind chills potentially dropping into the teens by Tuesday morning.

The National Weather Service will be conducting another briefing webinar at 1:30 PM today, and I will relay any updates or important information they provide following that briefing.

Lawrence County EMA will continue to monitor this system closely and will keep the public updated as we receive new information.

Now is a good time to:
• Review your severe weather safety plan
• Make sure you have multiple ways to receive weather alerts
• Know where you will go if a warning is issued

Drivers who regularly travel across the Wheeler Dam bridge will need to plan ahead later this month. The bridge is scheduled to fully close to all traffic from Friday, March 20 at 7:00 PM through Monday, March 23 at 5:00 AM as part of the Tennessee Valley Authority’s ongoing refurbishment project.

According to TVA, the temporary closure is necessary so crews can install a new epoxy overlay and replace bridge joints, which are designed to allow the bridge to expand and contract during temperature changes. These joints help prevent structural damage and extend the life of the bridge.

During the closure, no vehicles will be allowed to cross the Wheeler Dam bridge.
Drivers will need to follow detour routes depending on which side of the river they are traveling from:
• Lawrence County side: Alabama State Route 20 (Alternate US-72)
• Lauderdale County side: U.S. Highway 72, crossing the Tennessee River at the Singing River Bridge in Florence

TVA says if weather conditions prevent work from taking place that weekend, the full closure will shift to the following weekend instead.

Once the temporary closure ends, the bridge will return to single-lane traffic for passenger vehicles only, as it has been for much of the project. Truck traffic will continue to follow the detour routes until the project is completed later this spring.

The refurbishment project began in October 2025 and is focused on improving the bridge’s driving surface and structural components.

Anyone with questions about the project can contact TVA by email at [email protected].
