A special thank you to our community partner, Walmart , for giving our residents the opportunity to interview, grow, and take meaningful steps toward employment.

We are extremely proud of the residents who were hired, and we are just as proud of those who continue searching for the job that is the right fit for them. Every interview, every connection, and every opportunity is progress

Our partners at Walmart did more than provide employment opportunities. They shared valuable tips about what it means to be a great employee, the importance of commitment, and what employers look for in their team members.

But most importantly, they gave our residents hope.

Decatur Housing joined leaders from across health care, housing, and government last week at Bridging the Gap: The Intersection of Health and Housing, an invitation only convening sponsored by Bank of America and Enterprise Community Partners and held at the Carter Center in Atlanta.

Our Vice President of Real Estate Development, Nicole Wesley-Smith, spoke alongside representatives from Grady Health System, Mercy Housing, the City of Atlanta, and the Atlanta Regional Collaborative for Health Improvement.

Her message was impactful highlighting that investing in housing is an opportunity to invest in more than buildings. It is a chance to build the conditions that allow families to be healthy, connected, economically stable, and successful.

That work runs through Decatur Housing Initiative, our nonprofit subsidiary, and Resident Experience team, which builds partnerships and leads these efforts. The programs and partnerships have delivered:

-An annual health fair with more than 20 health practitioners and screening services
-18 residents placed into employment through expanded workforce development and financial literacy partnerships
-More than 4,000 pounds of food distributed in the last nine months through two food pantries
-60 students in after care, with academic support and structured activities
-Utility and rental assistance connections for households facing a shortfall

Together they address health, financial stability, food security, educational opportunity, and the ability to have housing stability.

Celebrating 13 Years of Leadership and Service! 👏

Decatur Housing Authority extends its heartfelt appreciation to Melissa Heffner for 13 years of dedicated service, including her leadership as Board Chair.

Throughout her tenure, Melissa has championed DHA’s growth and innovative approaches to expanding affordable housing opportunities in Decatur. Among her proudest accomplishments is helping guide the search for CEO, Larry H. Padilla, and supporting the organization as it entered an exciting new chapter under his leadership.

Melissa leaves DHA strong and well positioned for the future as she passes the torch to incoming Board Chair, Tennielle Bailey.
