Did you miss our last community gathering? We know Delton residents are invested in securing the future of our home, so thought we would share the highlights of Jeff Keesler’s presentation about planning and zoning!

Zoning Ordinance- Jeff Keesler
- Updating the zoning ordinance in Barry County for the first time since 2008
- Master plan updated in 2023 (goals and hopes and dreams)
- New ordinance will be more user friendly
- Hot topics: short-term rentals, shipping containers, data centers, tiny homes, gravel
- Proposed ordinances
o Want to allow small developmental areas to continue developments as “mixed-use” zones
o Short term rentals
§ Need to develop this still
§ Allowed by application to the planning commission
o Shipping Containers
§ Allowed considered as a shed (single story)
o Data Centers
§ REALLY hard to them completely
§ Allowed on parcels that are 50+ acres
§ Must be in an industrial zone
§ Must be 500 feet from homes, churches, businesses, etc.
§ Only one very small area in woodland township that this would be feasible
o Outdoor recreation
§ Allowing businesses for outdoor recreation to be operated
· Ex: kayak/bike rentals, wedding venues
o Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU)
§ Allowed by permission from the planning commission
§ 300sqft-1250sqft
§ Cannot be for a short-term rental
- Challenges of the times
o Michigan is losing farmland
o Housing shortage
o Solar farms
o Data centers
- Workshop at the Barry Community Foundation
o Wednesday, April 29 at 6pm
