Sometimes, being in the right place at the right time makes all the difference.

Back in December 2025, a Denison resident reported a dog missing to Animal Services. He posted flyers around town and shared information on Facebook, but despite his efforts and the efforts of Animal Services, the dog was never found.

Fast forward nearly nine months to September 14, 2026. Animal Services Officer Kuhn was responding to a call when he came across a dog that looked familiar. He brought her back to the shelter, where it was discovered that she was microchipped, but the chip was registered to a different Denison resident.

Still thinking the dog looked familiar, Kuhn decided to do a little digging. He searched through previous records and found the original missing-dog report from December. Kuhn contacted the man who had made the report and sent him photos. The man immediately recognized her.

As the pieces came together, they learned that the resident listed on the microchip had found the dog in January near the same area where she had originally gone missing. He had her microchipped and had been caring for her until she got out again, which ultimately led to her crossing paths with Officer Kuhn.

Both men came to the shelter and were able to identify the dog. Ultimately, the resident who had been caring for her made the decision to return her to her original family.

But there was one more special piece to the story.

The dog belonged to the original owner’s son, who is currently serving overseas in the Army. After learning that she had finally been found, he was able to FaceTime home and see his dog again. He was incredibly happy to see her safe and back home with his family.

Sometimes, it really is about being in the right place at the right time.

September 11, 2001 changed our country forever.

We remember the lives that were taken.
We remember the families who received the phone calls no one ever wants to receive.
We remember the first responders who ran toward the danger.
We remember the strangers who helped strangers.

And we remember how, for a brief moment, our differences seemed to disappear and we stood together as one.

23 years later, we still remember. We still honor. We still say their names.
