This page is dedicated to providing shelter for Denton's low income and homeless population NOW. Until that time we will continue to provide for the needs of our unhoused and at risk neighbors with the he

lp of the greater community. We believe in collaborative efforts that take into consideration the perspectives and voices of our unhoused and at risk neighbors. What is a Basic Services Center? It is a piece of property, approved by local government which provides a safe legal place for unsheltered people to sleep, cook, store their things and call their own. It has toilets, showers, water, a kitchen and trash pick up. It is governed by the residents with oversight by the sponsoring group, in this case that group is the Denton Basic Services Center Project. It will be patterned after the villages described in Tent City Urbanism by Andrew Heben Our goal is always to bring dignity, worth and real solutions to our unhoused neighbors in ways that are in keeping with their goals and needs not a system or philosophy.

If you are looking for rental assistance there are things you need to know.

1) despite all the orgs people online will point you to, don’t waste your time, most people have no experience at this and only a few Denton orgs provide rental assistance. AND that is all dependent on if they have recently received funds.

2) most orgs have a waiting list. It may be a mile long BUT get on that list. I have known people to suddenly get bumped to the top.

3) There is a difference between referral agencies and orgs who give rental assistance.
Referral agencies, like United Way, Serve Denton and the city of Denton can tell you who to apply to. It is helpful to tell agencies who referred you. BUT they know who has money and who doesn’t so call them or apply online. And DO APPLY ONLINE then follow up with a call.

Only Giving Grace, CCA in Lewisville, and Singing Oaks ( that I know of) help with rent. We sometimes help a little if we have the money, but very little.

Looking for rental assistance is not easy and is time consuming so know this ahead of time.

Ask agencies for referral to state agencies too.
Write everything down so you save yourself time.

Alternatives to assistance:
Give blood. Denton has a couple of places.
Start a gofundme
Talk to your landlord, explain your situation, some are nice. Ask them if they have work you can do in exchange for rent.
Best of luck. Stick with it.
