We know that the idea of the zipper merge can be a little intimidating. In reality, it's a simple way to keep traffic moving steadily.
The zipper merge is a traffic movement used during times of congestion when motorists are being guided into one lane. During planned lane closures, motorists are asked to use both lanes when approaching the construction zone and take turns merging (like a zipper) into a single lane. Traffic flows best when vehicles travel at roughly the same speed and the zipper merge allows for this.
It's important to remember that during a zipper merge, other drivers are not "cutting in line" and you are not being inconsiderate by "jumping ahead." It's in everyone's best interest to keep traffic moving smoothly and safely!
When traffic is not backed up, maintain your safe speed and get in the appropriate lane as early as you can safely do so.
