Lately I’ve been trying to clean out closets and organize parts of my life a little better.
I’ve realized downsizing probably needs to start with me.

Not because I plan on going anywhere anytime soon, but because I’ve watched how overwhelming it can be for families to sort through a lifetime of belongings while also carrying grief.

I think sometimes we keep things because we’re busy, sentimental, tired, or because we don't know what to do it so we put off the decisions. Before we know it, drawers become closets and closets become entire rooms.

So I’m trying to take small steps now, not perfectly, not all at once, just thoughtfully.

Maybe that’s part of loving our families too: leaving behind fewer burdens and a little more peace.

For my final “Wednesdays with Grammy” tribute to grandmothers who embody what I believe to be a Proverbs 31 woman, I want to honor two women who ironically share the same name: Joy.

To me, a Proverbs 31 woman is not defined by a polished appearance, a perfect life, or a carefully curated image. She is defined by strength of character, faith, loyalty, love, compassion, and the willingness to simply be present for the people who need her most.

Neither Joy’s story looks exactly the same, but both women have shown me something beautiful about what it truly means to be a grandmother: you show up.

One Joy never had biological grandchildren through her daughters, but she embraced step-grandchildren with open arms and an open heart. Through years of growth, change, hard seasons, and even distance, she has continued to love, encourage, support, and care for those children as her own.

The other Joy’s family became blended after tragedy. Her daughter married a widower whose children were still grieving the loss of their mother, while Joy’s own grandchildren were carrying the loss of their father. Bringing those lives together could not have been easy, but she made certain every child felt included, loved, protected, and seen. She stayed involved. She stayed present. She showed up.

What strikes me most is not how different their lives are, but how similar their love is.

Real grandmothering is not about perfection, biology, or having an easy road. It is about presence. It is about consistency. It is about choosing, again and again, to love the children in front of you.

And these two women did exactly that.

Last fall, I walked the quiet fields of Gettysburg, and what stayed with me was not the stories of ghosts, but the silence itself. It is a silence that seems to hold memory, sacrifice, and the weight of lives given for what others hoped this nation could become. Memorial Day reminds us that freedom has never been free, and that honoring the fallen means living with gratitude, humility, and respect for one another. May we never forget those who never made it home.

Back in late April and early May, my dad was in the hospital, and afterward he kept saying, “That hospital stay was a waste of money. They didn't do anything for me. It was a total waste of time". Those comments have stayed with me all month long.

May has been full of winery trips, soccer games, recitals, concerts, graduations, plays, senior games, and end-of-year celebrations. Some moments were amazing. Some didn’t quite meet my expectations.

There were moments I thought I’d feel more appreciated just for showing up. Moments I thought I’d feel more seen, more embraced, more important to the occasion. But life doesn’t always work that way.

And yet… when I really think about it, I did get my money’s worth, it has been worth my time.

Not because every event was perfect.
Not because every team won.
Not because anyone rolled out the red carpet.

But because I got to be there.

I got to spend time with people I love. I got to watch children grow, teams learn to work together, performers gain confidence, and families celebrate milestones. I got to witness life happening in real time.

What I’m learning is this: life is built by people who show up.

And while AI may someday say comforting things better than humans can, AI still can’t sit in the audience for you. It can’t clap at the recital. It can’t hug your neck after the game. It can’t physically be present.

Presence still matters.

So yes, May, I think you were worth my time, I did get my money’s worth after all.

The Proverbs 31 woman is often described as strong, wise, and faithful. Sometimes, her story is also one of courage and starting over. That is what I see in Vicky.

Vicky became a widow while still raising young children, yet she continued forward with strength and determination. Later, she remarried, moved to the United States, and together she and her husband built a new life filled with family, faith, and perseverance. Along the way, she has also faced physical battles within her own body through medical challenges and diagnoses, as well as the pain of discrimination. Yet those hardships never stole her spirit or her ability to love others well.

Now in her 70s, Vicky still travels, still sings, still performs, and still pours love into her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. What inspires me most is her resilience, strong without becoming bitter, courageous without losing compassion, and always willing to keep showing up for the people she loves.

To me, Vicky is a beautiful reminder that a woman’s strength is not measured only by what she survives, but by the love, grace, and joy she continues to give afterward.
