Affordable housing builds more than homes. It builds Colorado's economy.

A report from the nonpartisan Colorado Futures Center quantifies what housing advocates have long understood.

It finds that the development and preservation of affordable housing across the state generates $2.7 billion in economic activity each year, sustains over 14,000 jobs, and returns nearly $80 million in annual tax revenue to Colorado.

Private and public investments in Denver-area affordable housing alone resulted in more than $2 billion in annual economic output. In other words: affordable housing is not a net cost to Colorado’s economy; it is a contributor.

As housing costs rise and communities face displacement, ULC takes a different approach—one that prioritizes long-term impact over short-term gain. From affordable homes to nonprofit centers and community campuses, our work is helping people find stability, opportunity, and connection.

Since 2003, ULC has:
➡️ Delivered 2,000+ affordable homes
➡️ Supported 50+ nonprofits with below-market rate rent
➡️ Preserved 700,000+ sq ft of community-serving real estate

Nonprofits in the Denver area face significant barriers to property and asset ownership.

Over the years, ULC’s community land trust has reduced barriers by enabling nonprofits to own buildings while leasing the land beneath them at an affordable rate. The Boys & Girls Club, the Center for African American Health, and Re:Vision Co-op each own buildings within a ULC community land trust, for example.

Prop 123 funding is “structural” to how affordable housing happens in Colorado, said ULC’s Brad Dodson, in today’s The Colorado Sun story by Brian Eason. “If a funding source that is fundamental to the overall affordable housing financial infrastructure just goes away, then it creates ripple effects throughout the market — and for years into the future.”

Colorado families are counting on us to protect affordable housing. Prop 123 has helped Colorado invest nearly $502 million to finance 10,377 homes and support 87,603 households. Now lawmakers are proposing a bill that would reduce funding by 40%, including a 75% cut to affordable rental development.
