The average interest rate on the most popular U.S. home loan dropped to its lowest level since September as more evidence inflation is past its peak sent Treasury yields lower, data from the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) showed on Wednesday.

The US housing market has had a white hot year. Home sales are on track to reach the highest level in 15 years, with an estimated 6 million homes sold in 2021.

Rate hikes are coming. No doubt about it.

Raising the interest rate is an effort by the federal reserve to slow down inflation but it’s not clear that will cause a decrease in housing prices. Expects weigh in below.

“Lawrence Yun, chief economist at NAR, expects the 30-year fixed mortgage rate to increase to 3.5% by the end of 2022 as the Fed raises rates. But notes that it would be still lower than the pre-pandemic rate of 4%.”

The Fed's new policy of faster interest rate hikes will have far-reaching consequences for home prices and affordability.
