This Fourth of July marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the moment our nation first declared its belief in freedom, equality, and opportunity for all. That belief has never come easy. Our history holds real struggle alongside real progress, and 250 years later, the work of living up to our founding ideals continues.

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, the day enslaved people in
Galveston, Texas, finally received word that they were free, more than two
years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed. The news traveled
slowly, and freedom did not arrive everywhere at once; slavery would not be
fully and legally abolished across the country until the ratification of the
13th Amendment later that year. Juneteenth honors that long, uneven road to
freedom and the resilience of the people who carried it forward.
