Fort Walton Beach Police Department to conduct DUI checkpoints during Labor Day holiday week

The Fort Walton Beach Police Department has scheduled several DUI checkpoints in the city to coincide with the upcoming Labor Day holiday week. The checkpoints are part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s national Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign and are designed to deter drunk driving.

According to NHTSA statistics, there were 505 traffic crash fatalities nationwide during the 2024 Labor Day holiday. Of these 505 fatalities, 170 (34%) involved a drunk driver with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or above. Among drivers between the ages of 18 and 34 who were killed in crashes over the Labor Day holiday in 2024, 40% of those drivers were drunk, with BACs of .08 or higher.

"DUI checkpoints in Fort Walton Beach aren't about making arrests; they're about preventing them,” said Officer Seth Williams with the Fort Walton Beach Police Department. “Our goal is simple: to deter impaired drivers before they make life-altering decisions, and to keep all of our community safe.”

Drivers intending to drink during a Labor Day festivity should plan for a safe ride home by securing a designated driver or calling a taxi or rideshare. They shouldn’t wait until after drinking to plan how to get home. Impairment clouds a person’s judgment and endangers everyone on the road.

Here are the DUI checkpoints that the Fort Walton Beach Police will be conducting:

📌Friday, Aug. 28, 2026, 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Wright Parkway and Rogers Street
📌Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026, 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Wright Parkway and Rogers Street
📌Saturday, Sept. 5, 2026, 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. at U.S. Highway 98 at City Hall

FWB CLEANUP: The City of Fort Walton Beach’s Sanitation Department will run two programs in August, both free but limited to residential trash customers living within the city limits.

The city’s semi-annual neighborhood pickup program will run for the entire month, Aug. 3-27, with residential trash collection crews picking up large, unwanted household items such as furniture, appliances, mattresses and other items too large to fit in residential garbage bins.

The service is offered twice a year, in August and January, to residential customers within the city.

In a separate program, the city will offer free tire collection for city residents on Friday, Aug. 28.
