UPDATE AND FYI … the Destin City Council approved and awarded a bid submitted by “Great Lakes Dredging Co” for the West Destin Beach Renourishment project. The bid was for roughly $6.7 million which was pretty much as expected. Okaloosa County should have sufficient funds to do this without a bond. Great Lakes is the company that did the East Destin Project. They will be using a slightly larger hopper dredge than what the contractor (Weeks) used for the emergency project.

Once underway, the project should progress quickly. The volume of sand planned will be increased by 50,000 cu.yds to offset what was lost during Isaac. Bear in mind that the project will omit the middle portion (Oceania Condo and the 18 Gulf Shore Drive single family owners) along Holiday Isle. The contract calls for Great Lakes to mobilize shortly after the first of the year. They should be able to complete the project within 30 days after commencement.
