The Florida Department of Health in Okaloosa County (DOH- Okaloosa) has issued a water quality advisory for three locations, including one in the City of Fort Walton Beach:

Liza Jackson Park
338 Miracle Strip Parkway SW

Tests completed on Wednesday July 22, 2026, indicate that the water quality at Liza Jackson Park does not meet the recreational water quality criteria for Enterococcus bacteria recommended by the Florida Department of Health.

DOH-Okaloosa advises against any water-related activities at this location due to an increased risk of illness in swimmers. Sampling conducted during regular water quality monitoring showed that the level of bacteria exceeds the level established by state guidelines.

This advisory will continue until bacteria levels are below the accepted health level. Test results are available at FloridaHealth.gov/HealthyBeaches.

For more information, call 850-833-9247 or visit Okaloosa.FloridaHealth.gov.

HURLBURT DETONATIONS: Hurlburt Field will be conducting explosive demolition training between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. on June 3rd, 5th, 9th and 11th.

During the training, nearby residents may hear a loud noise or feel the vibrations associated with the demolition charge detonations that are planned to occur periodically throughout the day.

Base officials advise if the humidity is high or there is cloud coverage, the effects can seem louder and closer than on clear days.

BEACH RENOURISHMENT: A long-awaited beach renourishment project will begin the week of March 23 in Destin to restore approximately 150,600 cubic yards of sand lost to erosion from Hurricane Sally in 2020.

The $10 million project is largely funded through federal disaster recovery assistance, with $9 million coming from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and $1 million from Okaloosa County tourism beach restoration reserve funds.

Immediately following Hurricane Sally, Okaloosa County staff met with FEMA staff onsite to conduct visual estimates of beach erosion and begin the process of receiving federal restoration funds.

The project encompasses two areas of west Destin beaches, located between the South Bay by the Gulf Condos and the jetty, with a small gap separating the two sections. Mobilization of equipment will begin the week of March 23, with actual dredging starting in April.
