Birmingham has moved to ban new short-term rentals following a shooting at a local Airbnb.

The 36th District Court will close at 3:30 p.m. today, August 8th due to the concert at Ford Field and the Detroit Tigers game. Afternoon felony arraignments will proceed as normally scheduled.

Detroit is experiencing a widespread and damaging rental scam problem, predominantly known as the “Fake Landlord” scam. Scammers pose as property owners or managers and rent or sell homes they do not own, often targeting vulnerable populations searching for housing in a tight market.

🚨Here are the warning signs…🚨

• Being asked for security deposits or rent before seeing or signing a lease.

• Requests for payment via wire transfers, payment apps, gift cards, or cryptocurrency—methods that are hard to trace or recover.

• The supposed landlord refuses to meet in person or gives evasive answers, may claim to be out of town, or uses someone else to handle paperwork or keys.

• Multiple listings of the same property with inconsistencies or different contacts.
