Celebrating a century of architectural brilliance, Book Tower stands as a testament to Detroit’s enduring spirit and the meticulous craftsmanship of a seven-year historic restoration by ODA. Originally completed in 1926 by the Book Brothers, this Louis Kamper designed masterpiece has been brought back to life after sitting vacant for over a decade.

The care behind its restoration is visible throughout. It shows in thousands of hand-painted ceiling tiles and reinstalled marble, along with 29 restored caryatids and 2,483 windows designed in keeping with the building’s original architecture.

In The Rotunda, a three-story atrium rises to an art-glass skylight composed of more than 7,000 glass jewels and 6,000 glass panels set within a copper-plated brass matrix. The revival has reestablished Book Tower as a beloved part of downtown Detroit and earned recognition with a 2026 AIA New York State Design Award.

A defining presence in Detroit’s skyline, the historic Book Tower has been honored with a 2026 AIA New York State Design Award.

Originally completed in 1926, the 38-story Italian Renaissance landmark was carefully restored through a preservation-first approach that balances historic integrity with modern performance. The work included 2,483 historically accurate window replacements, full restoration of the ornamental crown and caryatid figures, and a precise reconstruction of the 6,000-piece stained glass domed skylight within the three-story atrium.

Today, Book Tower supports residential, hospitality and retail uses that bring renewed energy to Washington Boulevard. This recognition reflects Bedrock’s focus on preserving Detroit’s historic legacy while creating places that advance the city's evolution.
