SteelHaus Up-cycled | Modern | Eco-Friendly

SteelHaus is being build using twelve 40-foot tall-cube cargo shipping containers as the main structural element.

Bridging spaces between the containers allows for an open lofty feel, with ceilings of up to 18 ft

Views of the living room and courtyard of the 3bd 3ba space.

The main living area will rock an open floor plan with 19ft (5.8m) ceilings and 16ft (4.9m) four pane accordion doors opening to a fully private courtyard.

With the walls and roof going up, the dimension of the spaces start to become more apparent.

One challenge we had with developing on a small lot was parking for tenants.

Not wanting to lose usable sq. footage we cantilevered the alley containers to retain livable space above and still fit 3 parking spaces below 🚙🚗🏎

Alot of excitement starting the new year with this new view of the final containers stacked!

Seeing our idea transition from floorplans to real space we can walk through has been beyond exciting!

BUT much still to be done!

…but how good is this view?

This cut out will be the 8’x8’ balcony of the residential unit. You will get to watch the sunrise and the sunset from here. And if you poke your head around the corner you can even get a glimpse of downtown Detroit.

Yesterday was a special day for us as we stacked our final three containers!

With the core of the structure complete we will now begin tapping into utilities, pouring the ground level cement floors and constructing the walls.

The coolest part of this phase is being able to visualize the spaces in the real world instead of on the computer!

We captured our drone’s eye view of the last stacking session…It’s fun to see the plan view layout of the containers with the lot shape in real time instead of on paper finally!

We had to pause build progression while sourcing the remaining 6 containers, however we just wrapped up the search and hope to be back on-site in the coming weeks!

One of our motivating factors for designing with shipping containers was their plentifulness and cost effectiveness.

However due to Covid, we are actually facing container shortages, which has doubled prices. That in combination with raw building materials tripling, we put our design under the microscope, trying to find ways to reduce cost by redesigning spaces to make everything as efficient as possible.

We have had to find creative solutions to maintain our design and budget, but it’s all for the better!

Never let go of your vision!

A few shots courtesy of .by.joshua when we got our first view of elevation!

We now have the second level containers welded and centered to the first level.

We will next, be setting the cantilevered containers in the rear then going up our final two stories!

We hit a huge milestone this week and we’re able to go vertical with Steelhaus!

It’s incredible to start seeing scale in the project with the addition of the second level.
We can now visualize the spaces!

We now need to align the second floor by hand and weld them to the first. Then we will continue stacking the remaining four containers!

Turns out Harbor Freight floor jacks can partially lift 8,500lb shipping containers...who knew!

We were able to level and square up the first two boxes on the foundation with a little creativity and patience. Now we can go vertical!

We hope to have the crane out to stack 4 more boxes this week 🤞🏼
