Reflecting on 1997 (and my hair style), I’m filled with gratitude (not so much for my stylist!) looking back at our very first affordable housing development utilizing Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) in Westland’s Norwayne neighborhood.

"New Apartments Celebrate Change" was more than just a headline: it was our mission. Despite initial skepticism, we remained committed to the belief that high-quality, affordable housing is the bedrock of neighborhood stability. Seeing 300 people on the waiting list for just 60 units proved the critical need for our work.

With 40 years of experience in the Detroit market, Shelborne Development’s commitment to community revitalization remains steadfast. From Norwayne to our work in the City of Detroit, we continue to prioritize quality workmanship and sustainable~affordable housing solutions.

A heartfelt thank you to our many partners, city officials, and residents who have shared this journey with us over the last four decades. We are proud of our work and even more excited about the future of affordable housing!

"Saving the shell" offers a powerful environmental ROI. By rehabilitating historic foundations, we drastically reduce the carbon footprint of demolition and new builds. We then retrofit these spaces to meet rigorous NGBS (National Green Building Standard) specifications, ensuring they are energy-efficient and built for the future.

This mission is about more than just housing; it’s about providing stability, dignity, and sustainable community solutions while reducing our carbon footprint for our children and grandchildren. We are proud to honor Detroit’s history while delivering high-quality, affordable living.

15 years ago, we developed a project that truly shows what’s possible when the right partners come together: St. Aubin Square.

We rehabilitated 28 townhomes and 21 apartments that had sat vacant and boarded for years: turning blight into hope for families in our community.

Working alongside MSHDA and the City of Detroit, we were able to provide 49 previously homeless families and survivors of domestic violence and their children with a place to call home: giving them the stability, dignity, and opportunity needed to begin a new chapter and build a brighter future.

Over the last 15 years, we’ve seen the deep, positive impact that living in safe, high-quality, affordable housing has had on the families that have called St. Aubin Square home. It has provided the foundation of stability and dignity they deserve, allowing them to thrive and build a future within our community.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 15 years, but the mission remains the same: building more than just housing, we’re rebuilding lives!
