Today is the first day of school in the City of Detroit.

To every kid walking through those doors this morning — I see you. I was you.

When I was growing up in Detroit, a neighbor named Mr. Johnson paid me a dollar for every bag of litter I picked up off the block. I thought I was just earning pocket money. Really, he was teaching me the first lesson that changed my life:

The inches we need are everywhere around us.

Opportunity isn't somewhere far away. It's in the desk you sit at today. It's in the teacher who stays late to help you. It's in the kid next to you who could become your business partner one day. It's in the problems nobody else wants to solve.

Mr. Johnson showed me that if you look around your own neighborhood and find something worth fixing, you've already started.

So here's my challenge to every Detroit student today:

Look around. What needs fixing? What could be better? What do you see that everyone else walks past?

That's where your future starts. Not in some far-off place. Right there. In your school. On your block. In your own two hands.

I went from picking up litter for a dollar a bag to building a multi-million dollar business. Same city. Same mindset. Same lesson.

You'll see it when you believe it.

Being a Black-owned business and making payroll for 6 straight years is something I’ll never take for granted.

I’ve been upside down. I’ve had months where the numbers didn’t make sense. I’ve had to figure it out when there seemed like there was nothing left to figure out.

But somehow, some way… PAYROLL GOT MADE.

People see the business, the contracts, and the wins. They don’t always see the pressure of knowing families are depending on you to make sure that check hits.

So today, I salute EVERY business owner around the world who keeps finding a way to make payroll.

I don’t always stop to celebrate my wins. Most times, I just keep my head down and move on to the next thing.

But I’m learning that every win deserves a moment — because when something is celebrated, it becomes more likely to be replicated.

This honor means a lot to me. Thank you to everyone who voted for me, supported me, believed in me, and continues to speak life into my journey.
