🦬 Mexico has successfully reintroduced the American Buffalo/ Bison to the Chihuahuan Desert, returning the keystone species after a 160-year absence to help heal damaged landscapes and restore natural soil health.
-Timeline of the Return
2009: Conservationists brought 23 bison from South Dakota to Rancho El Uno in Chihuahua.
August–November 2025: A group of 47 bison was released at the El Santuario Reserve in Cuatrociénegas, Coahuila.
February 2026: Another 29 bison were moved to the state of Sonora to expand the northern population.
-How Bison Help the Desert
Tilling Soil: Their heavy hooves break up hard dirt so rainwater can sink deep into the ground.
Spreading Seeds: Native grass seeds stick to their thick fur and drop as they walk.
Lowering Fire Risk: By grazing on dry plants, they reduce fuel for wildfires.
Returning Wildlife: Pumas, lynxes, and dung beetles have returned to areas where the bison roam.
