Hey neighbors! Last weekend I attended the ADU Showcase at Boston City Hall Plaza. This ADU Showcase featured a full scale ADU model and educational sessions about permitting, financing, and design as the city explores ADUs as a housing solution.
An ADU aka Accessory Dwelling Unit is a smaller independent living space located on the same lot as a primary single family home. They contain their own independent living, sleeping, cooking and sanitation facilities and they are becoming one of the biggest conversations in real estate lately. I must admit ADUs could possibly be a game changer for some home owners and families.
One of the benefits to building an ADU is that it could provide extra space for adults who need to move back home or aging parents who need to stay close to the family. An ADU can provide Multigenerational living and present an affordable housing option for many families. Additional benefits to an ADU are extra rental income, the increase of your property's value or creating an affordable housing option for a renter in need.
Boston is actively pushing ADUs as part of the solution to the housing shortage, and seeing the full sized model in person allowed me to realize how spacious, modern, and functional these units are. (Enjoy the quick video of inside this model ADU, it's a little choppy but I had to avoid the numerous people in attendance!) Back one topic- The questions I kept hearing were:
Can my property qualify?
How much would this cost?
Would this increase my home value?
Can I legally rent it out?
Could this work for a multi-family?
If you have similar questions or if you've ever thought about adding an ADU to your property or buying a property with ADU potential, send me message so that I can arm you with my Boston ADU contact and set you on the path of what could be a great housing option for you and your family.
