Everyone’s heard the saying “They don’t make ‘em like that anymore”. Here’s a perfect example when it comes to old homes.
The 2x4 on the left actually measures 2” by 4” and comes from an old growth tree. You can see how resinous it is inside compared to the other piece. Cutting through this is like trying to saw through concrete, ask me how we know….😂 It came from a house built in 1911, btw.
The piece on the right is modern wood- you can see it’s not quite 2”x4” and it’s pretty spongy inside with the resin layers being spaced out.
