The question is not how many basis points it is increasing but how much the rate change represents as a percentage of the current rate. For instance, a rate hike of .25% is a common rate change amount. But a rate hike of .25% on .25% rate like March of 2022 is a 100% increase.

A 100% increase in a month creates an absolutely wild swing in yields, let alone if you look at the change over those 16 months. Going from .25% to 5.5% is a 2100% increase!

Unfortunately, the home buyers were dealt another blow with mortgage rates jumping to land around 7%. Of course, as we’ve been covering, home buyers, especially first time home buyers, are against a very difficult backdrop.

The Home price/income ratio is very high compared with any time in history. When you then add a stiff mortgage rate, it makes for a tough combination.

The 10-yr Treasury briefly went over 5% for the first time since 2007, and ended the week at 4.991%.
The bigger news, perhaps, is what didn’t happen. Despite the Fed rate hike, bond yields stayed almost flat. In 2022, the year started with Fed rates at 0-0.25%. Over the course of the next 16 months the Fed raised the rates up to 5.5%.

The Fed raised rates this week, and the bond market barely blinked. The 10-year Treasury briefly crossed 5% for the first time since 2007 before settling at 4.991%, but yields stayed remarkably flat, a far cry from the wild ride of 2022 and 2023. This week we explain why the percentage change matters more than the basis points, and why bonds may finally be getting back to being the boring, steady part of your portfolio.

As for Big Tech earnings, this week continued the story of companies receiving mixed results for beating their earnings expectations. Oracle had a huge earnings report and its share price went up.

Adobe also did better than expected, but its share price fell. Investors were largely concerned about Adobe adding free users, but not yet turning them into revenue.

Since December 2024, payroll employment among women is up roughly 765,000 while employment among men has fallen by about 6,000.

New Institute for Family Studies data shows that where more single men hold full-time jobs, marriage rates among young women are meaningfully higher... men's employment prospects shape whether families get started at all.

A strong labor market is good news, but a labor market that isn't putting men in a position to provide is a problem no quarterly report will capture.

A Fed Rate Hike seems Very Likely..

We added 162k jobs instead of the 58k expected. While this is a good sign for the health of companies and the market overall, it was somewhat bad news for a Fed rate hike. It increased the chance that the Fed will raise rates.

Because inflation is staying above the target and jobs appear steady, there is a very good chance that the Fed raises its rates by about 50 basis points.
