The reason I care about helping parents today…

is because someone helped mine.

June 12, 1998.

It was my senior ditch day.

That was also the day my grandfather passed away.

I still remember him because he meant so much to me.

He helped take care of me alongside my parents.

When my dad did not have two jobs, my grandfather helped pay our rent.

When I needed basketball shoes for my high school team, he helped with that too.

Looking back, I realize something.

He was helping create cash flow for our family…

before I even knew what cash flow was.

That is one reason I talk about this so much today.

Because many families need more than advice.

They need support.

They need options.

And sometimes they need extra money each month to care for the people they love.

What happens when Mom can't live alone anymore?

When most people look at a garage, they see storage.

I see possibilities.

As our parents get older, many families start asking the same questions:

How do we help them stay independent?

How do we keep them close to family?

How do we avoid unnecessary stress and expense?

For our family, an ADU may be part of that answer one day.

Not because we need it now.

But because planning ahead creates options.

And options create peace of mind.

A while back, I started talking about one simple idea: cash flow.

Not because I'm a mortgage guy.
Not because I'm a real estate guy.

Because cash flow affects all of us.

My high school daughters learning about money.

College students like my son, starting their journey into adulthood.

Parents trying to balance paying for sports, college, bills, and life.

And adult children who want to help aging parents live with dignity.

The truth is, life doesn't get cheaper.

But with a little planning, a little education, and the right strategy, we can create more options.

That's why I've enjoyed sharing these cash flow conversations.

Cash flow is simply extra money.

As our parents get older life doesn't stop or get cheaper.

Plus, they should enjoy their golden years and be able to travel if they like.

College also costs money so we that have young adults can also use extra income.

House rich…
cash poor?

There may be another way.

So many seniors are equity rich…

but cash poor.

And many believe the only way to use that equity…

is to sell the home.

Now, downsizing is not a bad strategy.

Sometimes it makes perfect sense.

But it is not the only option.

Nobody really talks about ways families may create more income from equity…

without selling the home.

Things like:

ADUs,

rental income,

better planning,

or using equity carefully.

Because many families want to keep the home.

Not just for money…

but for legacy.

Every family is different.

The important thing is understanding the options before making a big decision.

A reminder of why I talk so much about cash flow.

Because most people were never taught this.

Many people think creating more income is impossible.

Honestly…

I procrastinated learning about this stuff too.

But I was reminded something important:

Big goals start with small steps.

And everybody can use more income.

My parents.

Your parents.

My kids.

Your kids.

The truth is…

most people are afraid of making the wrong decision.

Me too.

That is why we have to humble ourselves and ask questions.

Ask for advice.

And learn little by little.

Because more income can create:

less stress,

more peace,

and more options for the people we love.
