🚨 **BEFORE YOU WIRE MONEY FOR A REAL ESTATE CLOSING, STOP AND VERIFY.**
Wire fraud is one of those scams where **one convincing email can put your entire down payment at risk.**
A scammer may make an email look completely legitimate—even using names, logos, signatures, and details from your transaction.
Then comes the urgency:
“Your wiring instructions changed.”
“Send the money immediately.”
“We don’t want to delay closing.”
🚩 **STOP. PICK UP THE PHONE.**
Never verify new wiring instructions by replying to the email or calling the number included in the message.
Instead, call your title or closing company using a phone number you **already know is correct** and verbally confirm the wiring instructions before sending anything.
If something changes unexpectedly, stop and verify.
And if you already sent money and think something may be wrong, **act immediately.** Contact your bank or wire company, ask for the fraud department, and request a wire recall. Then contact your title/closing company and report the incident to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
