If you encounter a moose, here’s what you should do. 🫎

Moose sightings are normal when hiking, biking, rafting on the river, or even just driving through downtown Driggs or Victor. They are a beautiful sight, but it’s important that you know what to do when you see them, both for your sake and for theirs!

➡️ 1: Keep your distance, the general rule is at least 3 car lengths of space.

➡️ 2: If you come up on one unexpectedly and startle them, stay calm, speak softly, and back away slowly.

➡️ 3: Keep dogs leashed and quiet. If someone warns you that moose are ahead, and you have dogs with you, go another way.

➡️ 4: Watch for signs of aggression, such as pinning the ears back or raising the hairs on its neck. Definitely back away if you notice that.

➡️ 5: If a moose charges, do not stand your ground. Run and try to find cover, like a large tree, to put between you.

➡️ 6: If driving and you see moose, keep your eye on the road. Often where one moose is, others are, such as their young. If you’re cruising along but have your head turned to watch out the side window, you might miss the fact that others have walked on the road ahead of you. Stay alert!

➡️ 7: If you’re rafting on the river and you see moose along the edge, stay quiet and calmly drift by them, giving them as much space as you can.

Wildlife encounters are a wonderful and normal occurrence here in Teton Valley and just one of the many reasons people love to visit our beautiful valley.
