Standing atop Backbone Mountain in Tucker County, Olson Observation Tower is West Virginia's first fire tower and one of the few historic towers still welcoming visitors today. Climb all 133 steps to the top for sweeping views of Blackwater Canyon and Otter Creek Wilderness—a perspective that once helped protect the Monongahela National Forest from wildfires.

Whether you drive to the tower or hike the popular 3-mile Canyon Rim Trail, the view at the top is well worth the climb.

There’s still time to take a float down the river!

And that’s a wrap on whitewater trips for summer 2026! It is incredible to have these water levels in September and we only had to cancel one whitewater trip all summer and it was due to high water not low! 🌊☀️

Thank you for all our customers that booked and came out this season, we love taking you down this beautiful river and giving you an almost heaven experience.

And thank you to our staff! We are so grateful for all our guides, shuttle drivers and office staff who show up each day to give our guests a safe, fun and memorable trip.

Our flat water rentals and shuttles are still open in September while water allows. Give us a call if you’re still wanting to a take a trip this month before we close up for the season.
