In 2020 the Department of Education paused student loan payments with a point of not reporting any negatives to the credit bureaus.

Come May 5th, payments will resume for any accounts in default status.

If you are considering buying a home in the near future or within the next 5 years, here are some things to consider and take action on:

- Reach out to your student loan servicer and make sure you are on an income driven repayment plan.

- Reduce using credit, if at all possible.

- Actively monitor your credit report. Many credit card companies and banks provide this service for free. Consider using free companies such as CreditKarma.com and Creditwise.com. Also look into getting your full 3 bureau credit profile report once per year via AnnualCreditReport.com.

Don’t get stuck paying rent because of these changes. You are in control!
