Not all value in the woods looks like straight timber—sometimes it shows up as a knot, swirl, and bulge in the bark.

Tree burls are one of the most unique and valuable natural anomalies in forestry. You’ll typically find them on species like walnut, maple, oak, and cherry, often near the base of the tree or along the trunk where the tree has been damaged or stressed over time.

And when harvested correctly, the value can be surprising. Small burls may bring a few hundred dollars, while large, high-quality walnut burls can reach several thousand dollars depending on size, grain pattern, and demand.

One of the cool things about my job is spending time in nature and seeing all that it offers. I found this little one walking a property!

Did you know....
-Whitetail fawns average approximately 300 spots.
-They spend most of their time bedded with mom coming back to feed.
-Twin fawns will typically be bedded in separate places to avoid depredation of both simultaneously.
-Fawns will greatly reduce their heart and respiratory rates when danger is near to avoid detection. This one breathed once in about 20 seconds!

You've probably heard it before.... If you find a fawn, snap your pics and get away. It's not orphaned. Mom is watching you!
