Them: “You left one of the nicest neighborhoods in Texas for acreage in Durango?”
Me: Yep 😌🌄

Texas was comfortable. Big homes. Familiar routines. But comfort isn’t always the same as fulfillment.

Durango felt different the moment we slowed down. Less polished. More honest. More room to breathe.

- Trading subdivisions for open skies 🌤️
• Quiet mornings instead of traffic noise ☕
• Land that invites kids to explore and roam 🌲
• Wildlife sightings instead of car alarms 🦌
• A home that feels like a basecamp, not a showpiece 🏕️

Sometimes the move that doesn’t make sense to others is the one that finally makes sense to you.

Life in the Animas Valley means sharing your backyard with wildlife — from hawks and eagles by the pond to deer wandering through. The other day, we had seven right behind our house, and our son thought they were sheep! Moments like these make it even more special to live here.

I’ve heard this more than once:

“We didn’t move for a bigger house. We moved for a better life.”

That’s Durango.

It’s not flashy.

It’s steady.

There are tradeoffs — higher prices, fewer conveniences, real winter.

But what you gain matters more.

- 🏡 A home that feels like a basecamp
• 🌄 Evenings that feel longer
• 🚲 Kids growing up outside
• 🏔 A lifestyle that doesn’t feel rushed

For the right family, that shift changes everything.

If you want to explore homes in Durango — neighborhoods, price ranges, and what fits your family — comment “GUIDE.” I’ll send you a link to my 40+ Durango guide.

Summer nights in the Animas Valley are something special — the sound of owls and coyotes echoing from our back deck, and days filled with sightings of hawks, herons, elk, and more. Nature truly feels alive out here.

Things in Durango that make ZERO sense to the average Texan moving here…

I say this with love, because I’ve had this conversation more times than I can count. On paper, Durango sounds simple. Mountains. Snow. Small town. But then you actually live here and realize how different daily life feels compared to places where everything is built for convenience first.

Like how a 15-minute drive can feel totally normal… but that same drive in winter means you’re checking road conditions, sunlight exposure, and whether your driveway faces north. Or how a “quick errand” sometimes means one store, one shot, because once you’re home, you’re home.

People don’t talk enough about how quiet it gets. Not lonely quiet — intentional quiet. The kind that forces you to slow down, cook more meals at home, plan ahead, and actually look at the weather before committing to anything.

A few things that surprise people the most:
• 🏔️ Elevation affects everything (sleep, workouts, even your mood)
• ❄️ Snow days don’t stop life — they just change the pace
• 🚗 AWD matters more than square footage
• 🕰️ Stores closing early is normal, not a glitch

It’s not better or worse. It’s just different. And the people who love Durango are usually the ones who lean into that difference instead of fighting it.

If you’re thinking about moving here, the biggest adjustment isn’t the snow or the mountains — it’s the mindset shift. Once that clicks, everything else feels easier.

Spotted some local wildlife on my morning run along County Road 203 — a group of turkeys crossing the road and a few deer along the way. Just one of the many reasons I love living in the Animas Valley — nature is part of everyday life here.

Unfortunately, the whole “leave Texas and buy a big house in Durango” thing actually works 🤷‍♂️🏔️

I know how it sounds. Like one of those internet clichés that gets repeated so much it stops feeling real.

But I’ve watched it happen again and again — real families, real numbers, real lifestyle shifts. People don’t just move here for the house. They move here because life finally feels lighter.

They go from feeling stretched in a place they know… to feeling grounded in a place that gives more back.

• Cooler summers and real seasons 🍂❄️
• Space for kids, dogs, and projects that never fit before 🐕👧
• Less noise, fewer crowds, more breathing room 🌲
• A slower pace without feeling disconnected

At some point, the question stops being “Can we make this work?” and becomes “Why are we forcing life to feel harder than it needs to be?”

One of the things my family and I love most about living in the Animas Valley is how easy it is to get outside and enjoy the scenery. Hiking is one of our go-tos — we’re on the Haflin Creek Trail here, but there are plenty of others nearby to explore. Another favorite is heading over to County Road 203, just across the valley. It’s perfect for running or road biking with those incredible valley views all around.

People ask all the time if Durango is really as good as it looks online.

Honestly? A lot of days, it’s better.

The biggest difference is the pace of life. More time outside. More sunshine. Less feeling rushed all the time.

Even winter feels different here when the sky is blue and the mountains are covered in snow.

Living in Southwest Colorado comes with tradeoffs, but for many families, the lifestyle is worth every bit of it.

At some point, we just got tired of the rush.

So we moved to Durango.

It wasn’t perfectly planned, and honestly, I don’t think a move like this ever is. But trading traffic and constant noise for trails, mountain air, and slower evenings was worth it.

A few things that change after moving here:
🏔️ Weekends revolve around the outdoors
👋 You actually know your neighbors
🧥 Your closet becomes mostly boots and jackets
☀️ Sunshine pulls you outside year-round
