One week to go! Do not miss your chance to Raise The Roof to help families thrive in Durham. It's the Block Party of the Year! Last year, 94% of the funds raised by Chefs for Change stayed with Families Moving Forward to help children and parents secure safe, stable housing. Money well spent!

This National Physical Fitness & Sports month, we want to give a shout out to our Pilates with Dana program! Dana is an FMF board member and has been hosting a beginner-friendly Pilates program for guests. These low-impact mat exercises are designed to help folks reduce stress; improve core strength, breath control, posture, flexibility, and balance; and spend time investing in self-care. Guests are enjoying the lessons and appreciate the meditative benefits too!

This Affordable Housing Month, we invite you to take a closer look at the latest county housing profiles released by the North Carolina Housing Coalition. The numbers tell a story we see every day alongside families in our community.

In Durham, the Fair Market Rent for a 2-bedroom apartment is now $1,711/month. Meanwhile, families living at 30% of the Area Median Income — which reflects the majority of households served by FMF — can afford roughly $800/month in rent without being cost burdened. That gap is not just a statistic; it is one of the driving forces behind family homelessness.

We are deeply grateful to the advocates pushing for more affordable housing, the landlords who partner with our families, and supporters like you who make programs like the NEST, Rapid Rehousing, and Branching Out possible. Because of this community, families are not only exiting homelessness — they are building stability, connection, and hope for the future.

"Having a deep freezer is a life changer for my family." — Monique

Words like these are exactly why we are so grateful for long-time partners like Assistance League of the Triangle Area.

For years, the Assistance League has shown up for our families in the most tangible, practical ways — from welcome baskets that greet parents and children when they arrive at shelter, to microwaves and deep freezers donated to our aftercare families as they settle into their new homes.

These aren't just things. They're tools for stability. A deep freezer means buying in bulk, stretching a grocery budget, and feeding your family well. A microwave means a hot meal after a long day. A welcome basket means walking into shelter and feeling like someone cares.

That's resilience-building in action — and the Assistance League of the Triangle Area makes it possible.

Thank you for seeing our families and investing in their futures. We are so honored to call you partners.

Chris Pearson just joined the FMF team as the new Director of Programs and Residential Services. Bringing a background in social work and public administration operations, Chris loves to merge the best practices of trauma-informed design with empathic effectiveness to highlight the strengths and resilience of clients and staff.

As a Charleston native, he has seen how changing economies in cities have left families behind. Following his passion for helping neighbors, Chris previously worked in one of South Carolina's largest mixed shelters and in Raleigh's largest comprehensive Permanent Supportive Housing apartment complex.

When he's not helping fellow community members, Chris loves exploring the Triangle's amazing food scene, attending Bulls games, and playing board games. Please help us welcome Chris to FMF!

Happy Mother's Day to all the incredible women we get to walk alongside every day.

To the moms in our shelter and those waiting to find safe space — your strength and love for your children inspires us every single day. To the mamas who've made it into housing and are working hard to build something better — we see you and are so proud of you.

To every woman who has stepped in and loved a child who needed it; a grandmother, an aunt, a friend, a mentor — you are a mother in every way that matters.

And today, we also hold space for those who find this day heavy. For those grieving the loss of a mother. For those whose relationship with their mom is complicated or painful. For those longing to be mothers or missing children they love.

Motherhood looks so many different ways, and today we honor all of it; the joy, the resilience, and the quiet hard work of loving someone with your whole heart.

We’ve welcomed many new families into shelter over the last few weeks, and our bedding supplies are running low.

Right now, we are in urgent need of new bedding items to help families feel safe, comfortable, and cared for as they move into the NEST.

If you’re able, please check out our Amazon Wishlist (sort by “Priority High to Low”) and send along the gift of comfort and security for a family starting a new chapter.

If you would prefer to drop off new bedding items in person, please contact Maryn ([email protected]; 919.683.5878x31) to schedule a time.

Thank you for helping us make sure every family has a soft place to land.
