This Affordable Housing Month, we invite you to take a closer look at the latest county housing profiles released by the North Carolina Housing Coalition. The numbers tell a story we see every day alongside families in our community.
In Durham, the Fair Market Rent for a 2-bedroom apartment is now $1,711/month. Meanwhile, families living at 30% of the Area Median Income — which reflects the majority of households served by FMF — can afford roughly $800/month in rent without being cost burdened. That gap is not just a statistic; it is one of the driving forces behind family homelessness.
We are deeply grateful to the advocates pushing for more affordable housing, the landlords who partner with our families, and supporters like you who make programs like the NEST, Rapid Rehousing, and Branching Out possible. Because of this community, families are not only exiting homelessness — they are building stability, connection, and hope for the future.
