It’s hard to believe a quarter of a century has passed since September 11, 2001, a day that changed our country, and so many lives, forever.
For those of us who remember that morning, we remember exactly where we were. We remember the disbelief as we watched the unimaginable unfold. We remember the fear and heartbreak, but we also remember what came next.
We remember the courage of the first responders who ran toward danger while others were running away. We remember ordinary people helping complete strangers. We remember neighbors checking on neighbors, communities coming together, and a country that, for a moment, seemed to put aside its differences and simply stand together.
Today, 25 years later, we remember the 2,977 lives taken far too soon, the families who have carried that loss ever since, and the first responders, service members and countless others whose lives were forever changed by that day and its aftermath.
A generation has now grown up knowing September 11 only through photographs, videos and the stories we tell. That makes remembering and sharing those stories even more important.
May we never forget those we lost.
May we never forget those who ran toward danger.
And may we never forget how, in our darkest hours, we found strength in one another.
