Many parents of teens with disabilities dread the day their kids age out of public school because graduation means nothing to do each day and few ways to connect with people.
To address this gap, A Farm Less Ordinary, a nonprofit founded by REALTOR® Greg Masucci and his wife Maya Wechsler, creates meaningful employment opportunities for young adults with intellectual, developmental, and cognitive disabilities.
The farm employs 31 "growers" who earn real wages and learn job skills. More important, the farm creates opportunities for young adults to get out of their houses, build friendships, and have pride in their work.
”You can see by the way people interact on the farm that they feel like they’re at home here. And I can’t think of a better reason to get up in the morning than to give people that feeling, you know?” says Masucci.
Last year, the farm harvested a remarkable 13,180 pounds of vegetables, which are sold at farmers markets and to area residents through community supported agriculture programs. They also donated about 4,400 pounds to local food pantries.
A new endeavor this season was planting thousands of raspberry and blueberry plants on two acres of land. In 2027, they plan to build a commercial kitchen so that growers can work year-round creating USDA-inspected food products like jams, pickles and syrups to sell in retail locations.
