Today we’re loading up the car and heading to Madison to move our daughter into her dorm for freshman year of college.
A special shout-out to all the parents who have packed the cars, made the Target runs, carried the bins and then faced that emotional drive home. It’s such an exciting milestone—but definitely a bittersweet one, too.
Wishing all the students starting a new school year an amazing year ahead—and sending a little extra love to all the parents adjusting to a quieter home!

If you—or your parents—have lived in the same home for 30+ years, the idea of eventually selling can feel overwhelming.

There may be decades of belongings to sort through, deferred maintenance to address, important paperwork to locate, and a lot of emotion tied to the home.

A few things that can help before a move becomes urgent:

• Start talking about future plans early
• Know where important home documents are kept
• Begin sorting and decluttering a little at a time
• Make a list of repairs or maintenance that may need attention
• Understand what the home may realistically be worth
• Talk through what the next move might look like

You do not have to do everything at once. Starting early can make the eventual transition much easier.

After almost 25 years helping families through moves like this, one thing we have learned is that having a plan can make a big difference.
