Real Boise Jimmy Conover Now I help families fall in love & find home in Boise, Idaho.

A Boise & Star, Idaho Realtor sharing cool spots about the area he loves.

4 years ago, we moved our family from Arizona to Idaho for a slower pace and a better quality of life.

The older I get, the more I realize the best parts of life are usually the simplest.

Friday night.
Dominos pizza.
Kids covered in pond water.
Watching the sunset from a beach 5 minutes from home.

And honestly?

This is exactly the kind of life we dreamed about when we left Arizona for Idaho.

When we moved to Star in 2020, this pond barely looked like a destination.

No dock.
No beach energy.
No families everywhere.

Now?

Every summer evening feels like the entire town shows up (and every surrounding town as well 👀)

This town is so awesome that because kids were trying to jump off the gazebo, they build a jumping platform for safety.

But it didn’t end there - a few months later, they build monkey bars into the pond.

And now this year - they added another jumping platform to the monkey bars.

I’m still waiting for the rope swing - you never know.

And not to mention - as of last year, we now have a snack shack and an equipment rental area.

This place is turning into quite the attraction.

But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows here - it’s still a pond with minimal circulation so as temperatures start to rise, I’d recommend going in places with more flow like the Boise River or lakes around the area.

Swimmers itch was a known problem during the summer months last year.

But I digress...

What’s funny is my kids now associate the smell of Dominos pizza with “pond night.”

That’s become the tradition.

And I know one day they’ll grow up and randomly smell pizza somewhere and instantly think about Star Pond on a summer Friday night.

That’s the stuff that matters.

Not the fancy vacations.

Not the expensive toys.

Just simple family memories repeated over and over again.

That’s honestly one of the biggest things Idaho gave us.

A slower pace.
More community.
More moments together.

And if you’ve been following me for awhile, you know this is exactly why we moved here.

So if you’re trying to figure out which Boise suburb might fit your family best…

I didn’t realize how important summer was…until I became a dad.

When my wife and I first lived in Arizona, we loved it.

12pm pool days in 116 and 12am pool nights at 108 😅

Lake days at Bartlett.

River floats down the Salt.

Pool parties at Talking Stick.

Back then, summer was just something we “dealt with.”

But once we had our first son…

everything changed.

And when I pictured childhood…

I didn’t picture running from one air conditioned building to another because it was 116 outside.

I pictured the kind of summers we grew up watching in movies.

Sandlot.
Heavyweights.
Parent Trap.

Capture the flag in the neighborhood

Riding bikes safely into town.

Ice cream trucks randomly showing up on a Sunday.

Staying outside until your parents told you to come home.

All the best childhood memories felt like summer.

And I remember thinking…

“Summer is where memories are made.”

That was one of the biggest reasons we left Arizona for Idaho.

And honestly…

Idaho has been even better than I imagined.

Now summer feels the way it’s supposed to feel.

✅ Neighborhood movie nights in the park

✅ Kids running through splash pads after dinner

✅ 4th of July parades where kids collect candy in the street

✅ Wed in McCall with the giant waterslide on the lake

✅ Camping trips where the mornings are 48 degrees instead of 98

To my Arizona folks...

Imagine a 4th of July that wasn’t scorching hot where you could actually enjoy being outside 🤯

And honestly

it feels like these towns were built for families

It’s hard to explain but your first summer you’ll feel it.

So if you’re just starting your search into moving to the Boise area but still trying to figure out which suburb is right for you...

P.S. The first summer evening in Idaho where you open the windows, hear kids outside playing, and feel that cool breeze roll in…

you’ll understand exactly why so many families never lea

Nestled just outside a small town about 40 minutes outside of Boise, Idaho is Marsing.

As you arrive in Marsing, you’ll pass this small rock formation with a cross at the top.

What you won’t see is that there’s a chapel on the other side of the rock formation with an absolutely stunning view.

Each year on Easter Sunday - this is where they hold a morning service.

It’s truly beautiful out here and worth the drive.

Things to know about this spot:

It’s on private property but allows public access so stay on the trail!

0\.4 mile hike to the top.

Two ways up: straight up the face that’s super steep

Or just walk around to the left and around the less steep side.

Head up there for sunset and you’ll be one of the few people up there.

It’s kind of like Camel’s Back but…way better.

Hike safely and respect the private land!

If you’re looking for a legit bagel in Boise… this is the spot.

Not the chain ones.
Not the soft bread circles pretending to be bagels.

Real New York style bagels.

Goldstein’s actually recreates New York tap water to make the dough. Apparently the mineral balance is what gives NYC bagels that chewy texture… so they engineered their water to match it.

And honestly… it works.

Crispy outside.
Chewy inside.
Exactly what a bagel should be.

Couple things to know before you go:

They bake bagels all day, not just in the morning.

They’ve got breakfast sandwiches, lunch sandwiches, smoked fish, babka, bialys, and a bunch of house cream cheeses.

They’re right downtown by Julia Davis Park, the Boise Zoo, the Greenbelt, and across from the library. Easy stop if you’re already walking around down there.

I tried the “I am a Prince, I’ll have it all.”

Bagel.
Egg.
Melty Cheese.
Bacon.

Sausage
Basically everything delicious on a bagel.

And it was fantastic.

Must get.

Comment “BAGEL” and I’ll send you their website so you can check it out for yourself.

Welcome to Lizard Butte in Marsing, Idaho.

A seriously underrated pocket of Idaho.

The Treasure Valley is great and all but when you peak over this section of the state, the views open up.

You have the Snake River running through the middle of the it and the Owyhee Mountains off in the distance

Not to mention the Sunny Slope Wine Country.

It’s truly beautiful out here and worth the drive.

Things to know about this hike:

It’s on private property but allows public access so stay on the trail!
