On Monday, we at Carner Development Group shared plans with the Village Board to fund a feasibility study for a proposed National Historic District focused solely on commercial buildings along Main Street in East Aurora.
Read our full statement below to learn more about the goals, benefits, and what this means for our community:
"Carner Development Group has announced plans to fund a feasibility study for a National Historical District which would be comprised solely of commercial buildings on Main Street in the village of East Aurora. This will remove the cost from the village where the Historic Preservation Commission had requested funding to apply for grants.
CDG President Rachel Krajewski stated, " We are continuing to fulfil our mission of preservation and repurposing historic landmarks. The benefits to our community are twofold; the appeal of a historic district in East Aurora fuels tourism and hospitality spending in the town and village and the tax credits, that owners can apply for, aid to upkeep and renovate qualifying buildings. We want to make it very clear that participation is voluntary and other commercial property owners will not be required to participate in the program."
Highlights of the National District include:
- Buildings that choose not to participate will face no restrictions. If a property opts out of pursuing tax credits, it is not required to coordinate with the State Historic Preservation Organization for exterior modifications. Instead, it simply adheres to existing village code.
- If interested, individual buildings may apply for tax credits and participate in the program.
- Establishing a National District lowers the barrier to entry for individual buyers and small-scale developers, making it easier to acquire historic properties and access funding for their restoration. A potential example of such a project is The Globe Building.
On Monday evening, Carner Development Group presented a brief overview to the Village Board, formally announcing their plans for the proposed district. Public outreach and education efforts for property owners and local businesses within the area will be scheduled to begin after the Thanksgiving holiday. The project work will be carried out by Clinton Brown Company Architects."
