East Hampton’s Ladies Village Improvement Society, better known as the LVIS, is one of the important local organizations that make East Hampton Village so wonderful

Founded in 1895 by 21 determined women, the LVIS began by doing simple but meaningful things: watering the dirt roads to keep the dust down, installing lanterns so residents could safely walk at night, and famously fighting efforts to fill in the Town Pond.

Over the last 130 years, they’ve continued to care for this village in countless ways. They maintain many of East Hampton’s historic trees, plant new ones every year, provide college scholarships to graduating high school seniors, host their beloved annual summer fair, and support their work through their thrift shops and fundraising efforts.

So much of the beauty and character we all cherish here exists because generations of women decided it was worth protecting and have worked hard at it. We owe them a tremendous thank you.
