“Should I depersonalize my home before selling?” Honestly… it depends.
The biggest thing is your comfort level and privacy. If there are personal photos, artwork, or items you wouldn’t want strangers seeing online or during showings, then yes — take them down. And if the home feels cluttered or overwhelming, simplifying the space usually helps.
But here’s the interesting thing: sterile and blank is not always better.
Lately, some of the hottest homes we’ve seen have been full of personality — eclectic gallery walls, cozy spaces, interesting artwork, tons of plants, warm lighting, and homes that feel lived in and loved. In several cases, buyers connected emotionally with the style and character of the home in a big way.
One seller’s daughter’s artwork became a huge talking point during showings and genuinely helped people connect with the space. It made the house memorable.
So instead of thinking “depersonalize,” I often think more in terms of “declutter and curate.”
Every market, price point, and house is different. That’s why having an experienced agent walk through your home before listing matters so much. Sometimes the right personality in a home helps it stand out more than a blank wall ever could.
