FRANKFORT, Ky. (Dec. 15, 2022) – The Kentucky State Police Foundation (KSPF) is offering the public the chance to own a classic 1990 Chevrolet 454 SS pickup truck that was once owned and restored by Kentucky State Police (KSP) Fallen Trooper Cameron Ponder. The family of Ponder graciously donated the truck to KSPF to raise funds for the new driver training skills pad that will be located at the KSP Training Academy in Frankfort.
The 1990 Chevrolet 454 SS truck is equipped with the original, rebuilt stock 454 motor and GM 400 transmission. Performance add-ons include headers with dual exhaust complete with March Belt System, modern serpentine belt, new four-core aluminum radiator, updated lights, and all-new Monroe shocks. The truck's interior is original.
Cameron spotted the truck in a parking lot with a "for sale" sign in the window and decided to purchase it. Cameron's stepfather, Alan Tiffany, said Ponder had a way of finding the potential in things, and this truck was a project he was excited to take on.
“Cameron was a young man who found something out there and put his thought into it," said Tiffany. "I hope someone looks at the truck and says this was a truck that was owned by a great man who served our country as a Navy veteran and state trooper. I hope somebody appreciates what he's done. It's not perfect, but it's perfectly solid."
Cameron began to restore the truck by rebuilding the engine and transmission. Once he knew it was reliable, he changed the truck's back end by taking away the stickers and painting it one solid color.
Cameron lost his life in 2015 in the line of duty during a routine traffic stop while trying to render aid to a stranded family. When he passed away, his stepfather promised to finish what the young trooper started. After the restoration project was completed, the truck was shared at car shows across the state.
"In truth, letting anything of Cameron's go is hard. God's plan is at work here; the timing is his," said Cameron's Mother, Brenda Tiffany. "I am humbled to make this donation in honor of my son. Someone is going to win a beautiful truck with a hero's story, and they can feel good knowing they were an intricate part of ensuring trooper safety."
KSP has 37 fallen units that died in the line of duty, and 47 percent of those line-of-duty deaths have stemmed from vehicle-related collisions. To increase officer safety on roadways, the KSP Foundation is undertaking the largest capital project in its history to build a new driver training skills pad.
The project will be a 400 x 600-foot driver training skills pad located at the KSP Training Academy in Frankfort. Currently, KSP uses other agency facilities, some located out-of-state, to conduct driver training and low-speed vehicle techniques. The new skills pad will be used for current and future KSP troopers and officers to receive day-to-day in-service training, cadet vehicle training, and mandated vehicle driving training.
"We are thankful to the Ponder family for helping build the new driver training skills pad," said KSPF Executive Director Hank Patton. “We will never forget their son's service and we are very grateful for the generosity and support of this most important project."
Raffle tickets are available online for $20, beginning December 15, 2022, through February 15, 2023. There are only 3,000 tickets available. To purchase raffle tickets, please visit the KSPF website. The drawing for a winner will be held on February 17, 2023, at 1 PM at KSP Headquarters and simulcast live on the KSPF page.
The KSP Foundation was established in 2015 and is seeking community partners and organizations wishing to collaborate with the agency to achieve its mission.
