From Navy helicopter pilots and a Marine Corps Iraq War veteran to a retired three-star Vice Admiral, these women have led in some of the toughest environments imaginable — while also being wives, mothers and military spouses.

So inspiring to hear about the Hellcats — women veterans running for Congress and supporting one another as they take that same mission-driven leadership into public service — along with the remarkable Six Star Club.

And what a privilege to meet Gov. Mikie Sherrill, Maura Sullivan, Rebecca Bennett and Vice Admiral Nancy Lacore.

Different stories. Different paths. One common thread:

Staples was a different chapter, and a different lesson than The Limited.

I was a senior buyer there, handling technology — PCs, printers, accessories. I started out buying for the stores, but as Staples grew, my role shifted toward supporting corporate accounts directly. I had a front-row seat as the company changed what it was, year over year.

What made it different from just having a job was the employee stock purchase plan. Payroll deduction, a discount on shares, the kind of plan that rewards you for sticking around. I watched the stock move as the company grew, and it wasn't abstract — it showed up in an actual account with my name on it.

Eventually my position was eliminated, but I'd already been buying and selling my own homes for years by that point, so the move into real estate wasn't really a leap into the unknown — it was a deliberate decision to do, professionally, something I already understood well.

I just didn't realize yet that I'd spend years afterward looking for the same thing Staples had given me: a real stake in what I was building. I found that again with eXp.

Going through old files from The Limited,
I kept coming back to the same two lessons.
The first was urgency — not stress, just a refusal to let something sit when it could be handled now.
The second was follow-through: actually closing the loop on what you said you'd do, without anyone having to follow up and check.
At the time I didn't think much of it. It was just how the job worked.
It took years in real estate to realize how much those two habits actually separate people who succeed from people who don't.
Those habits have been the foundation of everything since — first in retail, now in every transaction I close.

A quick update for anyone who noticed I've been quiet — I had hand surgery a few weeks ago and recovery has taken longer than expected.

Dupuytren’s contracture surgery.
Not really painful.

One upside of forced downtime: I finally went through boxes of old business files I'd been meaning to sort for years.

What I found surprised me.
Some of it has nothing to do with real estate directly, but everything to do with how I think about work, and I want to share some of it over the next few weeks.
