From the very beginning, the Church included women in spiritual leadership. Even the most "controversial" New Testament passages bear witness to a brand-new community that undoes all the ways we dominate one another, and radically includes women in the leading of it!
Tonight at 6:30 we will tackle these passages head-on, and you will leave with a faithful, informed understanding of the affirmation of women in the Church!

The New Testament proclaims a radical vision of creation that affirms the calling & leadership of women just as much as men.

Unfortunately, scripture has often been used to subjugate, not elevate, women. On Thursday @ 6:30 this week, we will dive deep into some of the most misused and misunderstood passages in the New Testament, showing how the gospel envisions and affirms their full partnership and leadership in the church, from the outset!

Hope you can join us!

Martin Buber, “Tales of the Hasidim:" "A rabbi was asked by one of his students “Why did God create atheists?” After a long pause, the rabbi finally responded with a soft but sincere voice. “God created atheists” he said, “to teach us the most important lesson of them all – the lesson of true compassion. You see, when an atheist performs an act of charity, visits someone who is sick, helps someone in need, and cares for the world, he is not doing so because of some religious teaching. He does not believe that God commanded him to perform this act. In fact, he does not believe in God at all, so his actions are based on his sense of morality. Look at the kindness he bestows on others simply because he feels it to be right. When someone reaches out to you for help. You should never say ‘I’ll pray that God will help you.’ Instead, for that moment, you should become an atheist – imagine there is no God who could help, and say ‘I will help you’.”

FYI: Calling all LGBTQ+ people in the UMC — or interested in it — to complete a survey.

This October, the Council of Bishops is holding a special leadership gathering: lay and clergy leaders from every episcopal area, coming together for prayer and discernment about the UMC's future after General Conference 2024. A group of LGBTQ+ people invited to that gathering connected beforehand and agreed on one thing — their voices alone aren't enough.

So they created a survey to bring LGBTQ+ voices from across the whole connection into the room with them, and they've asked us to help spread the word. They want to hear from you whether you're currently part of the UMC, used to be, or would like to be — to understand what it means to be LGBTQ+ in the UMC today, how you're engaged in the life of the church, and what the priorities should be for the future.

Add your voice. Survey closes Sunday, October 12.

"As a pastor of an intergenerational church, I have learned that some of the things that make church frustrating are also the things that make it beautiful.

Babies cry in the middle of the sermon.

An older saint needs the music turned down a little.

Teenagers fill a row and whisper to one another.

Young parents are doing everything they can just to be there.

A little boy drops something during prayer and crawls underneath the seats looking for it.

A widow stays after church because Sunday may be the most conversation she has all week

An older man tells you about how the church used to be, again.

A toddler spills crackers everywhere.

And somewhere in all of that, the body of Christ is learning to love beyond age, preference, personality, and stage of life.

Maybe that is part of the point.

The church is one of the few places where five generations can regularly share the same room, sing the same gospel, open the same Bible, pray for one another, and call each other family.

Young families need people who have already survived hard marriages, rebellious kids, grief, financial pressure, and disappointment.

Older Christians need the energy, questions, children, and hope of younger families.

Teenagers need adults who know their names.

Children need to see people grow old without growing critical about Jesus.

We do not need better programs for every generation.

We need the generations to belong to one another.

We need generations that share burdens, meals, stories, prayers, and life.

That is one of the miracles of an ordinary Sunday."

Even your most fragile, broken attempts at goodness are cause for divine joy. It matters!

"So let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up. So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us work for the good of all and especially for those of the family of faith." Galatians 6
