PSA- with the impending weather event known as Hurricane Florence, here’s some tips to help alleviate any storm related issues. Some are tips to be proactive in event of power outages.
1. Clean gutters and make sure they are properly installed and secure. Now is also a good time to make sure they discharge far enough away from the foundation. Water ponding along the foundation can be a huge source for basement flooding.
2. Make sure sump pumps are working. If you want to be proactive, install a battery back up sump pump. There are several options for back ups, and if unsure about installing, contact a plumber.
3. If you have a generator, make sure it runs! Also make sure you have enough gas. There’s no such thing as having too much gasoline, any left over fuel can be used in your vehicles so it won’t go to waste.
4. Flashlights are important! Candles are also a good source of light. Make sure to have spare batteries as well.
5. Have an exit plan. If the waters are rising, it’s good to know how you’re gonna get out of there! Not all of us are as hard core as Lt. Dan on the shrimp boat!
These are just precautionary tips. During the storm, it’s best to use common sense. If it looks unsafe, it probably is. If the roof leaks, put a bucket to catch the drip. Perform roof repairs after the storm. Good luck, let’s hope it passes a little smoother than predicted!
