A few years back, I showed up to the annual Linnihan bash in the exact same costume as our host, Michelle. Without missing a beat, she looked at me and declared, “Mary Katherine Gallagher Squared” — and just like that, we teamed up and had double the fun.

My client, Matthew Ryan, was murdered by his nephew last week. He was 41 years old, a successful businessman, and a devoted single father of four. A man who paid his nephew’s rent, his cell phone bill, and then drove over to help him fix a cupboard. That’s where he was killed.

His children are 21, 20, 10, and 8. They are navigating grief and financial freefall at the same time. I refuse to watch them lose the home Matthew worked so hard to give them.

Today, on Earth Day, I am reminded of how remarkable Mother Earth is.

She hands out oxygen, water, and awe so staggering it can stop a heartbeat mid-beat — exquisite sunrises, the hush of a forest after rain, the improbability of a monarch butterfly finding its way home across two thousand miles without a map.

And still, in this breathtaking place we call home, we have paved over her meadows, poisoned her rivers, and filled her lungs with smoke. Still she hands us another morning. Another tide. Another season of fireflies, first snowfall, and the smell of rain before it arrives.

She is not a warehouse. She is not a dumping ground. She is the original mother, patient beyond reason, generous to a fault, and wounded in ways that will take decades to heal. We have treated her like a well we assumed would never run dry.

We did not inherit this earth from our ancestors. We are borrowing it from our grandchildren.

She deserves our reverence. Our respect. Our restraint.

The morning is still hers to give.

Jaci and I had the privilege of helping pack 600 boxes of food for our immigrant communities who still live in fear of leaving their homes. We have to be there for each other; it’s kind of the whole point of life.
