This simple step can save you from a major headache during winter:
Leaving tap water running during freezing temperatures is a preventive measure to avoid pipe freezing and bursting, which can cause significant damage to your home. Here’s why it’s important:
1. Water Movement Prevents Freezing:
When water is flowing, it is less likely to freeze compared to stagnant water. A slow drip or small stream keeps water moving through the pipes, reducing the chance of ice formation.
2. Relieves Pressure:
If a pipe does begin to freeze, the flowing water helps relieve pressure buildup within the pipe. Excessive pressure from expanding ice is what often causes pipes to burst.
3. Protects Vulnerable Pipes:
Pipes in uninsulated or poorly heated areas, such as basements, attics, or exterior walls, are more prone to freezing. Running water helps protect these pipes even if the surrounding temperature drops below freezing.
4. Saves Money on Repairs:
While letting water drip may slightly increase your water bill, it is far less expensive than repairing water damage or replacing burst pipes.
To conserve water while protecting your pipes, you can:
• Let only the cold water drip from the faucet.
• Target faucets connected to pipes most at risk of freezing.
• Use insulation to protect pipes in vulnerable areas.
