Urge IDNR to Deny Renewal of Deer Run Mine's Permits!
If the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) renews the permits, Deer Run mine will continue creating farmland damages through ongoing topsoil losses and harm to area streams and natural drainage. More than 7,000 acres are at stake. Longwall coal mining inflicts long standing disruption; farm families suffer as they contend with permanent changes in their previously flat, efficiently farmed fields and they don't know if damages will be repaired or how long it might take.

Finally, millions of tons more coal will be mined if these permits are renewed, adding significantly to greenhouse gas emissions from the methane that is released at the mine to carbon dioxide released in the burning of coal. Illinois must consider the negative impact of coal mining and take steps to ensure farmers, communities, and our climate aren’t at the mercy of the mines.

Please let IDNR know that this is unacceptable. Take Action Now!

Information for City Council vote on September 19 at 7pm. Please show up early and pack the chambers! Bring your kids or grandkids!

New proposal benefitting Edwardsville greenspace at City Council Tuesday 9/19 at 7pm! Let's fill the chambers! Your presence and/or your voice at the meeting can impact the future of greenspace in Edwardsville. A proposal has been made to increase Edwardsville sales tax by 1/4 cent per $1 (excluding medicine and food groceries). This funding would be used initially for the city to purchase greenspace land for new parks, improve parks and greenspaces, and then gradually over 30 years would be used to meet funding requirements for public safety pensions. This 1/4 cent sales tax increase would add $1 to a $400 purchase, or 5 cents to a $20 purchase. After 30 years it would switch completely over to be used as funding for public safety pensions.

"The City has determined that a new revenue source is necessary to fund contributions to public safety pension funds, greenspace acquisition and maintenance, and capital improvements."

How does Edwardsville sales tax compare currently?...
"The change, if approved, would make Edwardsville's sales tax 7.6%, still lower than the rate in O'Fallon, Collinsville and Alton, for example. By comparison, the Troy sales tax rate is at 6.8%, while it's 8.35% in Fairview Heights."

Hello All,

Your voices are needed. Tomorrow night the Administrative and Community Services committee (ACS) is meeting to hear the following item:
A Resolution Authorizing the Application for a PARC Grant for the acquisition of approximately 120 acres of greenspace adjacent to Richards Woods and the acceptance of said grant if we are awarded said grant

This is a combination of these 3 forested parcels.

The meeting is at 5pm in City Hall. Forested acreage of this size near the middle of town is too precious to lose. If you are available, please come to speak in favor of this acquisition.
