Being a Realtor is not for the faint of heart. There are times when I’ve asked myself if I want to continue this journey. I’m approaching three full years next month and I can say that I’ve learned lessons that some agents do not get to experience early on. Those experiences have allowed me to sell luxury homes to rental properties in the lower income areas of the city. I’m able to connect to individuals from various backgrounds and financial positions.
A growth lesson I’ve learned is to not put trust into what people say but rather observe what they do. Actions speak louder than words in this business.
Another lesson is to not get emotionally attached to prospects, clients, and deals. There are times when a prospect/client you’ve nurtured over time decides to go with another realtor or an anomaly occurs in life that keeps them from selling/buying.
The final and most important lesson I’ve learned is to be authentic and confident in who I am. I cannot allow racism, bigotry, prejudice, and stereotypes to affect me, especially in affluent neighborhoods. I have enough stories to last all day with the last sentence.
I’m confident in my competence. I’ve spent countless hours each day learning, being coached, and self-development, which speaks for itself when it’s time to handle business. I’ll remain confident, humble, and true to myself throughout this journey.
To those who are embarking on this journey of being an entrepreneur, just know that you’re not alone. It’s difficult at times but remain diligent and find your niche. Do not sell your soul, remain faithful to the process, and lean not on your own understanding.
