The City of Elk Grove - City Hall is considering an ordinance change that would impact where e-bikes and e-scooters can be ridden.
Under the proposed ordinance, riding an e-bike or e-scooter on a sidewalk would be prohibited unless signs specifically allow it. That means riders should be prepared to use designated bike lanes and other lawful areas instead of the sidewalk.
And parents, we need your help.
If your child rides an e-bike or e-scooter, take the time to make sure they understand the rules of the road and how to ride safely. These devices aren't just toys, they share the road with vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians, and riders have a responsibility to operate them safely.
Talk with your kids about wearing a helmet, obeying traffic signals and signs, watching their speed, staying alert, and respecting pedestrians and other roadway users.
The ordinance change is still proposed, and we'll share more information if it is adopted.
Safe riding starts before the wheels start moving. Know the rules. Teach the rules. Ride responsibly.
